Plastering

Plastering is ideal for use on interior walls and ceilings, whether it’s to repair cracks or to apply a new render that will be painted.

Some people will choose to take the DIY approach to plastering, especially if its a smaller job. If you decide to do this then it’s important to to know the rules of a good plastering job as covered below. Failure to adhere to these rules can result in a lot of wasted time and frustration, not to mention money.

Rules of a Good Plastering Job

  • photo-9A Good Supply of Water – Having a supply of readily available water is absolutely essential when plastering. The reason for this is that plaster sets very fast and when it does its incredibly difficult to remove it. Therefore you must clean your equipment as you go. Failing to do this will usually mean that you have to replace your tools which becomes costly and is easily avoidable. The best way to ensure you have a good amount of clean water nearby is to full several buckets prior to starting the job which you can use for cleaning and mixing.  Try to avoid washing too much slurry down the drain when working as this can easily clog it up once it starts to accumulate.
  • Allow Adequate Time – Whilst plastering itself does not take a huge amount of time, setting up and cleaning up does. For this reason you should allow yourself at least half a day if you’re planning to do plastering work. This will give you adequate time to set up prior to starting and will also give you enough time to clean up once the work is finished.
  • Plan Ahead – Planning ahead is vital when plastering. It’s important to know in advance exactly how much work you intend to do in a given session. This will prevent you from trying to tackle too much at once. The amount of work you try to get done in one session will depend on how much experience you have. You should always go for quality first rather than trying to get the job done quickly as plastering is not something to be rushed.
