Types of Damp?

There are a few different types of damp that can affect a property. There are –

• Rising Damp – Rising damp is where a building will absorb moisture from the ground which causes damage to the foundations. This type of damp will only affect the bottom floor of a building. One of the biggest telltale signs that a building has rising damp is if you see a ‘tide mark’ across the bottom of the interior walls.
• Condensation – Condensation is an extremely common type of dampness. More severe cases of condensation will result in black mould appearing on the interior walls of a property. Because condensation is the main culprit, this type of damp is usually worst in the winter months.
• Penetrating Damp – Penetrating damp is most common in older properties that have solid walls. Often the cause of this type of damp will be a leaking pipe which will allow water to get into the interior of the walls. It can also occur as a result of persistent rainfall penetrating through the brickwork. Brickwork can only take so much water before it breaks it way through and causes water damage, damp and  a lot more problems in your property – but do not panic as every problem can be rectified.
